Origin of the Guinea Grinder
By: Brenda Blackford
The Guinea Grinder is an Italian Sausage sandwich, typically with mozzarella cheese and a special sauce, served on a toasted hoagie bun. The name originated from a food stand at the Iowa State Fair, “Jennie’s Original Guinea Grinder,” which used the term “guinea” in its name. This usage is rooted in 20th-century slang that was used to minimize and identify ethnic groups. For those who don’t know – This is a must have!
